What is Therapy?

Therapy Means Change

As human beings, we naturally seek to live happy and emotionally healthy lives. When we experience persistent suffering and distress, it means that something is blocking us from accessing the resources we need to live fulfilling lives.

Growing up in challenging circumstances can lead us to develop certain beliefs and behaviours that allow us to cope with a pain that we are too young to fully experience. As we grow up, these behaviours and thoughts can block us from experiencing satisfaction and living fully.

This can also happen as a result of  a very painful or stressful situation experienced later on in life. There are many situations and crises that can challenge our sense of safety. It is normal to try to guard agains the intense emotions that surround these experiences.

These thoughts and behaviours are difficult to identify on your own, and they are difficult to let go of them because it feels like you are inviting the pain that they were devised to avoid.

This is not an easy process, but it is the only way to experience meaningful and long lasting change. We often underestimate our capacity to change in meaningful ways. This change doesn’t take forever, and a new life awaits on the other side.

In my experience, therapy is most helpful when these three elements are in place:

  1. A competent & experienced therapist

  2. You’re motivated & willing to change

  3. A collaborative & trusting relationship emerges between therapist & client
